Meet in the...

Keeping Cool

We've all been there before...

We hear a position from the "other" side and we lose our minds!

How can they possibly believe that?

How is that even grounded in reality?

Are they CRAZY?

When we are coming together to find common ground,
it's important that we keep our collective cool.

One of the hardest parts of the
Purple Points Protocol
is listening without interrupting.

It's tempting to want to reply...
or to argue...
or to offer exclamations of indignation!!!!!!!!

Instead, we need to breathe.

To pause.

And to listen.

Take time to choose your words wisely.

Make sure they are respectful.

Seek to understand, not to convince.

If we can all keep our cool,
perhaps we can find the center
and move forward.

I'm the sweetest person ever, or so I like to think. But using a popular word these days I get "triggered" sometimes by something someone says and I want to scream at them. I feel outraged that anyone could believe such a thing.
And sort of related... there's a think going around that's a recording of a word. People here "Laurel" or "yanni" I hadn't heard of it til last night. My husband carries it over and asks me... what do you hear? I say "Laurel" He says, "Really?" He plays it again and again, I keep saying "Laurel" Turns out, he's hearing "yanni" At which point we're thinking the other is crazy because those two words are nothing alike.
I have him look up the science and it has to do with what tones and our hearing and stuff like that.
It makes me wonder if politics is kind of like that.

Love that comparison, Gerry! We're a "Yanny" household here and we've all been wondering how anyone can possibly hear "Laurel". :) Maybe we all just need to acknowledge we're operating on different frequencies sometimes...
