Purple Points
Protocol

WHAT IS THE PURPLE POINTS PROTOCOL?

Take a look...

Purple Living Room parties are as much about listening as they are about talking.
The Purple Points protocol makes sure that everyone’s voice is heard...

1st Listening Circle: Personal Statement

Going around the circle, each person takes a minute or two to talk honestly about his or her beliefs and opinions related to the topic of discussion.  Participants listen actively, but do not interject while others are speaking.

    SOUNDS LIKE:        “I believe…because…"               "I think…because…"                 "I feel…because…”

2nd Listening Circle: Making Connections

The second time around the circle, each person takes another minute or two to speak without interruption. This time, the focus is on making connections with others. Comments should link to what has already been said and try to  build bridges between the ideas that have been shared.

SOUNDS LIKE:  “This resonated with me because…"  "Her statement reminded me that…  "His idea made me think..."

Purple Points Conversation

Finally, everyone has a chance to talk back and forth. The goal is to find areas of agreement, no matter how small. Everyone focuses on finding common ground on the topic of discussion. The hosts record all Purple Points.  Everyone must agree on a statement for it to be considered a Purple Point.

SOUNDS LIKE:  “A common theme seems to be…"   "It sounds like we all feel that…"   "Do we all agree that…”
There are three discussion rounds in each Purple Living Room Party…
