Wise words.
What do YOU wonder? Do you wonder what people on the other side of the political spectrum are thinking? Do you wonder how "they" see the same world through a different lens? Do you wonder how "they" feel about the issues that are important to you? The only way to find out is to be curious and to ask. In our current political bubbles, we often assume we know what others are thinking and feeling without really taking the time to find out. The Purple Points Protocol offers us a way to open our ears, our minds, and our hearts to one another. Let's take time out to wonder... perhaps it will take us on a path to wisdom.

Have you seen the new documentary about Mister Rogers?
Won't You Be My Neighbor? is being released this summer, 50 years after the first episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired on public television. It's a timely reminder of the good that one individual can accomplish through a message of compassion and neighborly love. Do you remember the opening song? It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood, A beautiful day for a neighbor, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? It's a neighborly day in this beautywood, A neighborly day for a beauty, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you. So let's make the most of this beautiful day, Since we're together, we might as well say, Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won't you be my neighbor? Won't you please, Won't you please, Please won't you be my neighbor? Think of that... What if we were to treat each other with that kind of warmth? What if we could honestly tell each other we WANT to be neighbors? "I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you." If we can start from a place of neighborly trust and compassion, surely the purple points won't be so hard to find. Do you remember how he closed each episode? "You've made this day a special day, by just your being you. There's no person in the whole world like you, and I like you, just the way you are." Powerful words. Thank you for being you, Mr. Rogers. This week, the world watched and waited with baited breath while a valiant team of divers worked together to rescue twelve young soccer players and their coach stuck in a cave in Thailand.
We all watched together while news trickled in about the amazing rescue operation. We all mourned together the loss of the brave diver, Saman Kunan, who lost his life in the heroic effort to save the children. We all cheered with delight together when the news broke that all of the boys were all safely out of the cave. During the process, the Thai Navy Seals ended their twitter updates with the phrase, "HOOYAH!" It became a rallying cry for the rescue effort. You can read more about "hooyah" in this Guardian article. The hashtag #hooyah is filled with joyful images and tributes to the rescue team that worked so hard together to bring the boys home. Can we harness that "Hooyah" spirit? We have so much work to accomplish together. Let's get going... Happy 4th of July! As we come together today to celebrate our shared history, let's pledge to work TOGETHER to make our nation stronger! What could be more patriotic than a friendly discussion focused on positive outcomes for our country? As we enjoy the parades and the fireworks today, let's remember that we can work EVERYDAY to build a more respectful nation together! Have a Safe and Happy Fourth of July! -The Purple Living Room Team |
